٢And thou art an indweller of this city -

Wa anta hillum bihaazal balad

٣And the begetter and that which he begat,

Wa waalidinw wa maa walad

٤We verily have created man in an atmosphere:

Laqad khalaqnal insaana fee kabad

٥Thinketh he that none hath power over him?

Ayahsabu al-lai yaqdira 'alaihi ahad

٦And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:

Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal lubadaa

٧Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

Ayahsabu al lam yarahooo ahad

٨Did We not assign unto him two eyes

Alam naj'al lahoo 'aynayn

٩And a tongue and two lips,

Wa lisaananw wa shafatayn

١٠And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?

Wa hadaynaahun najdayn

١١But he hath not attempted the Ascent -

Falaq tahamal-'aqabah

١٢Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -

Wa maaa adraaka mal'aqabah

١٣(It is) to free a slave,

Fakku raqabah

١٤And to feed in the day of hunger.

Aw it'aamun fee yawmin zee masghabah

١٥An orphan near of kin,

Yateeman zaa maqrabah

١٦Or some poor wretch in misery,

Aw miskeenan zaa matrabah

١٧And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.

Summa kaana minal lazeena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bissabri wa tawaasaw bilmarhamah

١٨Their place will be on the right hand.

Ulaaa'ika As-haabul maimanah

١٩But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.

Wallazeena kafaroo bi aayaatinaa hum as-haabul Mash'amah

٢٠Fire will be an awning over them.
