٢Createth man from a clot.

Khalaqal insaana min 'alaq

٣Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,

Iqra wa rab bukal akram

٤Who teacheth by the pen,

Al lazee 'allama bil qalam

٥Teacheth man that which he knew not.

'Al lamal insaana ma lam y'alam

٦Nay, but verily man is rebellious

Kallaa innal insaana layatghaa

٧That he thinketh himself independent!

Ar-ra aahus taghnaa

٨Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.

Innna ilaa rabbikar ruj'aa

٩Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth

Ara-aital lazee yanhaa

١٠A slave when he prayeth?

'Abdan iza sallaa

١١Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)

Ara-aita in kana 'alal hudaa

١٢Or enjoineth piety?

Au amara bit taqwaa

١٣Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?

Ara-aita in kaz zaba wa ta walla

١٤Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?

Alam y'alam bi-an nal lahaa yaraa

١٥Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -

Kalla la illam yantahi la nasfa'am bin nasiyah

١٦The lying, sinful forelock -

Nasiyatin kazi batin khaatiyah

١٧Then let him call upon his henchmen!

Fal yad'u naadiyah

١٨We will call the guards of hell.

Sanad 'uz zabaaniyah

١٩Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).

Kalla; la tuti'hu wasjud waqtarib
